    • To make your packing and unpacking easier, make a layout of your current and new space.
    • Tag the items and take pictures of your existing home to document the arrangements. This will make recreating those arrangements in your new home easier.
    • Packing your shed, garage, and basement is a good idea since it takes a longer time than you expect.
    • Avoid buying too many groceries before the moving day.
    • Safely dispose of hazardous household chemicals like paint and oil.
    • Basic bedding, bathroom, and kitchen supplies such as sheets, basic hygiene items, paper plates, and plastic utensils must be marked as "last on" or "first off".
    • Pack valuable items such as jewelry and your children's toys and snacks with you.
    • Prepare a moving-day folder that has the mover's contract, cash for tips, and documents related to your new home, like directions and key phone numbers.

Other Things to Keep in Mind Before Your Move

    • Get quotes from at least 3 moving companies before you decide on a particular one.
    • Understand your company’s moving policy, if you're being transferred by work.
    • Recycle, sell, or donate things that you don't want to move and identify old sheets and towels that could be used as packing materials.
    • Make a packing plan and assign tasks.
    • Designate a room for packaging, storing, and organizing.
    • Get in touch with the insurance agent to transfer medical, property, fire, and auto insurance policies.
